The Marine Technology Society (MTS) is pleased to offer thousands of dollars worth of SCHOLARSHIPS to undergraduate and graduate students at four year colleges, and students at two-year technical schools or community colleges who are studying a marine science/engineering/technology field, as well as graduating high school seniors. Please alert your students to this opportunity.

2011 ALERT and BIOSENSE Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are now available for students to apply to - Application deadlines are February 25, 2011.
The summer 2011 ALERT REU project descriptions are now available for students to view. ALERT is a multi-university Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence (COE) that seeks to conduct transformational research, technology and educational development for effective characterization, detection, mitigation and response to the explosives-related threats facing the country and the world. The ALERT research program focuses on the challenges of ultra-reliable screening, explosives detection at a distance, or unequivocal pre- and post-blast mitigation that has helped to design the research thrusts that the REU program offers. The BIOSENSE program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded REU site that allows students to conduct research that involves the use of subsurface sensing and imaging techniques for real-world biomedical applications. BIOSENSE research is conducted at both Northeastern and Massachusetts General Hospital. The research projects available through the REU will allow students to engage in one of three areas: basic biological or medical research; development of a product to meet specific needs in the biomedical marketplace; or translational research moving the basic concepts from the academic laboratory to the clinical setting. 2011 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Nanotechnology is now available to apply to - Application deadline is February 28, 2011- The University of Massachusetts Amherst is offering a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) in nanotechnology for undergraduate students to apply to. This is a ten week lab and learning experience that is being held this summer from May 31, 2011 until August 6, 2011. This will provide students with an opportunity to conduct research in an area of interest, and will also allow them to meet and work with other students, researchers, and other professionals. 2011 REU Summer Program at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico - Deadline for applications is February 2, 2011. - Interested in going to Puerto Rico? Here is your chance! The National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center is conducting a summer student program for undergraduate and graduate students at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Students will be able to conduct research in radio astronomy, planetary studies, and space and atmospheric sciences. We strongly encourage undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in electronic instrumentation or computer science to apply. The program anticipates supporting up to seven undergraduates and one or two positions for graduate students who are in their first or second year. For more information please visit NAIC Puerto Rico. 2011 Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI) program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus- The Data Sciences Summer Institute is a six week long program that consists of classes and tutorials on Data Sciences, collaborative research projects, and the opportunity to hear expert speakers. This program provides students the ability to conduct research in multiple areas, some of which include Databases and Information Integration, and Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Information Extraction. Students who are in their junior or senior year at school or are beginning their graduate studies and are completing either a major or minor in Computer Science are encouraged to apply. Catching UP
As you know we are preparing for our 2010 YSP Poster Session to be held here at NU on Thursday, August 5th from 10 - 1 p.m. in Raytheon (Egan Building). I started the YSP Program in 1989 with a federal grant, hoping to encourage more US students to enter Science and Engineering majors. The original program ran for about nine years, starting again five years ago. Through the years I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing young students. I thought it might be beneficial to our new students to see just how far many of the alumni have gone and thought a blog might help some of you stay connected. Please share your stories, ideas and resources with your fellow YSP's. As you can see I am still here at NU running multiple programs. In addition to the YSP and RET programs, I am co-principal investigator of a NSF STEP grant, expanding partnerships between NU and several Community Colleges. I continue to work with the Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging and also a new Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, ALERT. My three children are now grown. My daughter became a teacher and recently was married, my son's are in college at Assumption and UMASS Amherst. I look forward to hearing from you all.
